The 2025 Hamburg Open has experienced a significant shake-up in its player field, with several high-profile withdrawals just weeks before the tournament's commencement. The most notable absence is that of world No. 1, Jannik Sinner, adding to a list of top players who have pulled out.
Initially boasting nine of the top 20 ATP players, including three from the top 10, the tournament, scheduled for May 18th, has seen its strength significantly diminished due to its new calendar slot. Previously held in July, the Hamburg Open's new position in the week leading up to the French Open has proven detrimental to attracting top talent.
Alongside Sinner, Lorenzo Musetti and Holger Rune, ranked ninth and tenth respectively, have withdrawn. Tommy Paul and Stefanos Tsitsipas, along with Sebastian Korda and Ugo Humbert, further depleted the initial strong field. Many of these withdrawals followed the Italian Open semi-finals, where players like Sinner, Musetti, and Paul reached the latter stages.
However, there's a significant silver lining. Alexander Zverev, Germany's leading tennis star and world No. 2, has accepted an A+ wildcard. This high-level wildcard, usually reserved for top players, allowed him a late entry into the ATP 500 event. Zverev's participation represents a substantial boost to the tournament's appeal after initially not planning to compete.
His decision followed his quarter-final loss to Musetti in Rome. As the 2023 Hamburg champion and last year's runner-up, Zverev will bring considerable star power to the tournament. Despite several withdrawals, the Hamburg Open will still feature Frances Tiafoe, Andrey Rublev, and Francisco Cerundolo, who are all in the top 20.
