Zamalek's Unstoppable Reign: Third Consecutive African Volleyball Title

Zamalek's women's volleyball team has cemented its place in African volleyball history, winning an incredible third consecutive African title. Their hard-fought 3-1 (29-27, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22) victory over arch-rivals Al Ahly in the final of the Women’s African Volleyball Club Championship in Abuja, Nigeria, captivated hundreds of fans and showcased the exceptional talent of both Egyptian giants.

The final, a rematch of last year's closely contested 3-2 victory for Zamalek, was a spectacular display of athleticism and skill. The match was graced by a high-profile delegation from the Nigerian government, including the First Lady, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and CAVB President Bouchra Hajij.

This triumph marks Zamalek's third consecutive African title, following their wins in 2023 (Tunisia) and 2024. This victory secures their place in the FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship, representing Africa on the global stage.

Zamalek's journey to the final was nothing short of dominant. They topped Pool D undefeated, securing three 3-0 wins against Kenya Prisons, Chief of Naval Stars Spikers (Nigeria), and Spiking Stars (Botswana). Their momentum continued through the knockout stages with a resounding 3-0 victory over Club Omnisport Descartes (Ivory Coast) in the Round of 16, and a 3-1 win over Kenya's KCB in the quarterfinals. A nail-biting 3-2 semi-final triumph against Kenya Pipeline set the stage for the final showdown with Al Ahly.

Al Ahly's path to the final involved a convincing straight-sets victory over Tunisia's CF Carthage. However, they were ultimately unable to overcome Zamalek's powerful performance.

Kenya Pipeline secured the bronze medal, defeating CF Carthage in the third-place playoff. This mirrors their result in the 2024 edition.

Zamalek's dominance extended beyond the overall win. They secured four spots in the competition's Dream Team: Mariam Metwally (Most Valuable Player), Icel Nadim (Best Libero), Shrouk Mahmoud (Best Setter), and Toqaallah Eassa (Best Opposite). Al Ahly also had strong representation with May Abdelmaguid (Best Middle Blocker) and Tatjana Bokan (Best Outside Hitter). The remaining Dream Team spots were filled by Trizah Atuka (Kenya Pipeline) as Second Best Middle Blocker and Jihen Mohamed (CF Carthage) as Second Best Outside Hitter.

A total of 16 clubs from 10 African countries participated in the tournament, marking a significant return for the championship to Nigeria, after last hosting in 1996.

Zamalek’s victory not only showcases their exceptional skill and teamwork, but also highlights the growing strength and competitiveness of women’s volleyball in Africa.
